COVID-19’s Impact on State Unemployment Insurance: A View of the Current and Future Challenges Facing Employers
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the filing of more than 90 million unemployment claims across the country. Employers saw record levels of benefits paid out and fraudulent claims filed, the removal of core eligibility standards need to qualify for unemployment benefits, and the most progressive unemployment benefit award platform ever put together.
In this session you will learn how much of the financial burden could fall on employers in the aftermath and what changes have already been implemented to address the post-COVID labor market. In addition, we’ll discuss how to manage:
  • Fraudulent and imposter filed claims
  • The backlog of unadjudicated claims
  • Benefit overpayment and fraud recovery
  • Employers’ liabilities when the federal subsidization of unemployment benefits came to an end
  • Expansion of standard unemployment benefits
  • Future concerns for employers paying State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) tax and those paying via reimbursing
  • The Wyden-Bennet plan to revamp the SUI system
  • Legislative issues on unemployment insurance facing the 117th Congress
